Everyone knows that February 14 is Valentine’s Day, but did you know that it is also National Condom Day? Not only do condoms protect against pregnancy, they also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
STIs spread from person to person through all types of sexual activity. They can also spread through blood (particularly with IV drug users who may share needles and/or syringes). Condoms can help prevent the spread of STIs including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV. Often times STIs come with no symptoms, which is why it is important to be tested whenever you enter a new sexual relationship and always use a condom to prevent STIs and unintended pregnancies.
Health Educator Amy Fancher said, “Tioga County residents are diagnosed with STIs every week. It’s ultimately about education and prevention. Getting tested, knowing the risks, and using condoms are all great ways to help prevent these infections.”
See your primary care provider for testing! Tioga Opportunities Family Planning also provides STI/HIV testing and FREE condoms.
This Valentine’s Day, think past the chocolates and flowers, and think about your sexual health! For more information, check us out on Facebook or call us at (607) 687-8600!
